No, i think that without social media and TV people would not be aware of the situation. The shocking images and videos make you aware about what is going on, this makes you donating money. You get the feeling you can help by donating money because you really see what is going on.

No I do not think so, due to Facebook and Twitter, the message of the urgence of the help needed is spread so much faster and in less time much more people know about it and therefore more people will donate. But when people do not know anything about it, they cannot donate.
