One of the five most stunning posts on Social Media: Nick and Simon

02/01/2014 00:00

One of the most stunning posts on Social Media was a post of the Dutch artists Nick and Simon from Volendam. They own a Facebook page together and both write things about their lives as an artist on it; Simon ending it with SK and Nick with an N.

Nick and Simon wanted to make their fans aware of Haiyan in the Philippines and Simon put the following on Facebook:

"Watching the videos and pictures of the Philippines with a lump in my throat. If you could miss some money, donate to Giro 555!"

Circled in red in the picture above, you can see the post of Simon. All the comments in between the blue line are positive and the comment in green is sort of in between, it's more of a warning.

Giro 555 has been opened to donate money and this person says that Giro 555 is swindling. Also is mentioned that the money all goes to the bosses and asserts that it knows all about it. But this person also gives a tip, namely to visit the country itself or to send someone there to make sure the money gets there.

In these 2 pictures, the red circle shows that people who think donating to the Philippines is a good thing are really getting angry with the ones who argue that it's more important to take care of the Dutch first. The 3 pink circles show comments in which the youth (deducted from the fact that they mentoin they are going to ask their parents/school if they can donate money) are thinking about donating money. These 3 children all have a positive comment but that also means that they can read the negative comments. The ability of the children being able to read them could scare them of Social Media or even worse. These negative comments are both marked in the green line.

The first comment:

This is unacceptable, Let the Filipinos themselves make sure the situation will be alright or ask money of America or anywhere else. Just leave us out of this and this doesn't have to anything with not wanting to or being able to. The Dutch need the help as well and also in this place is childprostitution, etc. Open your eyes and help your neighbours or closely related first....

This person think it's just more important to care about the Dutch than care about the Filipinos right now. This summarizes her whole point in one sentence.

The comments below suggests that the President of the Philippines should simply donate a million peso (Filipino currency) instead of flying over the concerning area. There is also said that this person is not the only one who thinks this way, but that it belongs to the 80 per cent of the Dutch who all think this way.

This 80 per cent isn't true. According to BOINNK, https://boinnk.nl/blog/66213/bijna-23-deel-van-de-bevolking-weigert-te-doneren-aan-de-filipijnen/ , 59 per cent of the Dutch population isn't willing to donate money to the Philippines.

After Nick and Simon's page got so many harsh and negative reactions, Simon decided to upload a second post:

In which he says that he was shocked by the reactions on his well-meant post. Simon learned at home that it was  important to help people who need help and to ask for help whenever you need it yourself. He had especially mentioned the COULD in his first post because he knows that a lot of people cannot miss the money.

In the one before last paragraph he mentions that he doesn't know for sure whenever all the money collected is going to reach its meant-to-be destination but he's sure about one thing: If you do nothing, nobody's situation gets better.

Then, in the last paragraph he says that he respects every single one's opinion and see his post as asuggestion, not as something obligatory.

But again, a lot of negative reactions were uploaded on his post. Just as the one above:

Just do the things you are good at, namely supporting Nick. It should be the time that in Holland, for once, attention will be payed to the Dutch who live underneath the povertyline. Pay attention to that for once.

The number of the Dutch living under the poverty line has been rising last year. According to statistics of the CBS (Dutch Office of Statistics) and SCP (Office for Social and and Cultural Plans), 7.6 per cent of the population lives beneath this line. This 7.6 per cent of the population is in numbers 1.2 million people.

To conclude, we thought this really was a shocking post on the Social Media, especially paying attention to its reactions.
